Richer Than You Think

A well-known banking slogan has circulated for years: "You're richer than you think." The idea is straightforward enough. You may have more financial potential sitting dormant than you have ever realized. But what if that phrase pointed to something far greater than a bank account, an investment portfolio, or the equity in a house? What if the richest thing about your life had nothing to do with money at all?

That is precisely what the apostle Paul declares in Ephesians 1. Writing with the passion of a poet and the precision of a theologian, Paul insists that every believer in Christ has been blessed with every spiritual blessing. Not some blessings. Not a few carefully rationed gifts. Every spiritual blessing. The Father chose you. The Son redeemed you. And the Holy Spirit now lives within you as a living, breathing guarantee of everything God has promised. By any honest measure, if you belong to Christ, you are richer than you think.

The Starting Point: Receiving the Good News

Before any of this becomes real in a person's life, it starts with receiving the good news. Paul describes this in Ephesians 1:13-14, explaining how a person is sealed with the Holy Spirit. It is not a mysterious process reserved for a spiritual elite. It follows a clear and deeply personal path.

The first step is hearing the truth. Not simply letting words pass through your ears, but genuinely encountering the message that Jesus Christ died for sin and rose again, and that through him forgiveness and eternal life are freely given. Jesus himself promised in John 16 that the Spirit of truth would guide people into all truth. The gospel is the vehicle the Spirit uses to reach a human heart.

But hearing alone is not enough. The second step is believing the truth. The Holy Spirit convicts the human heart of sin, righteousness, and judgment, as Jesus explains in John 16:8. Belief means mentally accepting that Jesus authored salvation and that what he accomplished on the cross is real and sufficient. And yet even this is not the finish line. As James 2:19 soberly reminds us, even demons believe, and they tremble. Belief without trust is incomplete.

The third and most demanding step is trust. This is where many people stall. Trust is not a matter of the mind alone. It is the heart's willingness to take a risk, to move from intellectual agreement to full surrender, to say with everything you are: I am committing my life to Jesus Christ. An old saying captures this well. The farthest journey a person ever takes is the one from the head to the heart. When that journey is made, when trust is extended, the Holy Spirit takes up residence in a person's life, not because of spiritual achievement or personal worthiness, but because of simple, courageous, wholehearted trust.

A New Identity, Sealed and Secured

When the Holy Spirit comes to live within a believer, something remarkable happens. He seals that life. In the ancient world, a seal on a document or a shipment of goods communicated three things: security, authenticity, and ownership. It showed who something belonged to and where it was headed. The Holy Spirit functions in exactly this way in the life of a believer.

This matters enormously because so many people spend their lives wearing labels that were never meant for them. Labels of failure, rejection, addiction, age, poverty, or defeat. These labels stick through painful experiences, the words of others, and years of accumulated disappointment. They feel permanent. They feel defining. But they are not.

Romans 8:15 declares that believers have not received a spirit of fear and bondage, but rather a spirit of adoption, by which they cry out to God as Father. The Holy Spirit is the seal that identifies every believer as a child of God. That is the only label that carries ultimate weight. Not the one applied by a difficult past, a broken relationship, or a season of failure. The one applied by God himself, who says simply and irrevocably: you are mine.

Living out of that identity is not arrogance. It is faithfulness to the truth. It means setting aside the tattered, ill-fitting labels of the past and walking in the freedom that belongs to the sons and daughters of the King.

An Inheritance That Cannot Be Taken Away

Perhaps the most breathtaking aspect of what Paul describes in these verses is this: the Holy Spirit is not only a seal of identity but a guarantee of inheritance. He is described as the down payment, the first installment of everything God has promised to his children.

Some people grew up in families where inheritance was used as leverage, dangled as a reward for good behaviour and threatened as punishment for failure. Some Christians unconsciously project that same dynamic onto God, imagining that one mistake could result in their name being erased, their inheritance revoked. But Paul paints an entirely different picture. God does not hold an eraser over his children. He gives them a guarantee: the Holy Spirit himself dwelling within them.

Romans 8:17 makes the staggering claim that because believers are God's children, they are also his heirs, and with Christ they share in God's glory. The inheritance waiting for every believer is eternal, imperishable, and already reserved. The Holy Spirit living within is the seed of that promise, packed with potential, pointing toward a harvest of blessings that stretches into eternity.

A Reason to Give Thanks

The Father planned your salvation before the world began. The Son accomplished it through his death and resurrection. The Spirit seals it and guarantees it in your daily life. This is the full and glorious picture of what it means to belong to Christ.

You have been chosen. You have been adopted. You have been redeemed. You have been forgiven. You have been sealed. And you have an inheritance waiting that no circumstance, no failure, and no enemy can take from you.

Whatever you are carrying today, whatever labels have been pressed into you by life or by your own inner voice, this is the truth that stands above all of it: in Christ, you are richer than you think.
